Eddy Current Suppression Ring is a right arse of a name, it sounds both ridiculously laboured and kinda cool at the same time. They're from Australia and basically offer up an antipodean take on the kinda thing The Muslims/Soft Pack are doing except with (kinda obviously) less of a Fall/NZ tinge and more emphasis on hard riffing garage rock ala Stooges but less feral, possessed & more lunkish. This ain't no bad thing, there's some fabulous raw guitar shredding on here, the drums are well blunted & thudding and the bass is of the low, looming, grooving variety. I'm not sure if I could ever stomach an entire album by them again as i've listened to 'Primary Colours' about 8 times recently and quite frankly i'm fed up with the singer's faux Iggy-isms but there are many moments that are truly exhilarating. I don't really understand Aussie Garage Rock, it always seems a bit too stubbornly workmanlike to these ears, compared to say, some of the US Estrus style gear & Billy Childish's remarkable career, but I reckon ECSR are definitely the best of the current bunch and as a bonus to their new UK fanbase (they hope) the previous album is included on an extra disc. Funnily enough we've just got the brand new Jet single in too. I know where my money would go, eh lads? on Melodic
